To commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Chernobyl accident, we launched a competition giving students the opportunity to express their thoughts in poetry or prose about how they might have felt if their lives had been affected by the disaster.

A shortlist was chosen by the Remember Chernobyl Working Group.

The final judging was carried out by:

• James Mates, Senior ITV News Correspondent;

• Michael Morpurgo, Children's Laureate in 2003/4.

Teachers who submitted entries for the competition said that students found the exercise interesting and thought provoking. The quality of the entries was high and the winning poems and essays are published here.

Many thanks to all those schools and pupils who took part in the competition
